Police investigating head-on crash that left operator with 'severe and incapacitating' injuries

Staff Report

STAMFORD -- Stamford Police are investigating a two vehicle, head-on crash on Long Ridge Road which left one woman with "severe and incapacitating" injuries Tuesday night, according to police.

The collision, which happened on Long Ridge Road (Rt. 104) just north of Old Ridge Road, occurred at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and caused the road to be closed for three hours, police said.

A 2009 Subaru Forester operated by Judy Stewart, 55, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., was traveling northbound on Long Ridge Road when the vehicle collided head-on with a southbound 2006 Ford E350 extended passenger van operated by Alexander Fonarow, 24, of Pound Ridge, N.Y., according to police. The accident happened in the 2400 block of Long Ridge Road.

Stewart had to be extricated by the Long Ridge Fire Company and was transported by a Stamford Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Stamford Hospital, police said. She had "severe and incapacitating" injuries, which required surgery, according to police. Stamford Hospital officials said Stewart was in serious condition Wednesday morning.

Fonarow and four passengers were also transported to Stamford Hospital for minor injuries, where they were treated and released, according to police.

The Stamford Police Department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad are asking any witnesses to the collision to call 203-977-4712
