'Thunder on the Sound' ride to raise funds for soup kitchen, food bank

STAMFORD -- Area residents can join Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia on Sunday, Sept. 26, as he leads more than 100 bikes in the second annual Thunder on the Sound: "Wheels for Meals," a motorcycle ride and barbecue for charity (rain date: Oct. 3).

Riders and non-riders are welcome at the event, which is raising funds for the New Covenant House (Stamford Soup Kitchen) and The Foodbank of Lower Fairfield County. Registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. at the commuter parking lot near Merrit Parkway Exit 35, and runs until 9:30 a.m. The cost is $30 per person; $10 per person ages 12 and under.

Those without motorcycles are welcome to take part in the event at 11 a.m. at the Ponus Yacht Club parking lot, 41 Bateman Way, Stamford. On display at the parking lot will be more than 40 antique cars from the Gateway Antique Auto Club.

There will be live music at the event from Sharkey and the Unknowns, and all the riders are expected to arrive around noon. A barbecue will also be served, and the event includes raffle prizes and auctions.
