Letterman tosses off mild Bristol Palin jokes

NEW YORK (AP) -- David Letterman finds the Bristol Palin-Levi Johnston engagement announcement irresistible as monologue fodder.

But the late-night host, who ran afoul of the Palin family last year with a misfired joke, took it relatively easy on the young couple on Wednesday's "Late Show."

Letterman joked that Johnston will arrive for the wedding tied to "Sarah Palin's pickup." He also wisecracked that Bristol Palin made the announcement on an "hour-long ESPN special," a reference to the channel's show on LeBron James.

Letterman's final Palin joke poked fun at himself. Last year, he apologized to the Palins for a ribald joke involving one of their daughters. On Wednesday, the CBS host noted that Johnston, who made comments critical of the Palins, has issued a "heartfelt apology" to them.

Letterman paused a couple of beats, then said: "That kind of rings a bell."

I was surprised when I found out the main reason Sarah Palin''s objection to her daughter marrying Levi Johnston. She didn''t like the look of his balls. What ever happened to intelligence? Was that even a factor?

Sarah Palin has never publically said why she has objections to Levi Johnston. Maybe it has to do with his/his sister and mother''s smear campaign of lies about her and her family. Sort of like what you are doing on here now.

Do you enjoy spreading rumor/gossip even if it isn''t the truth?? Really, don''t you have anything else to do with your life?

Love you Sarah!

Letterman has a few problems of his own as I recall to be laughing at anyone else. Wasn''t he the pig that was sleeping with the hired help on his show while his wife was at home raising their son? Was that son born out of wedlock? And Letterman is not even a teenager!

The crassness of the Palin family is unbelievable. Mamma is teaching you well little Bristol... you only need stage a reconciliation with studboy for as long as it takes for the check to clear for the exclusive from Us Magazine!

Sarah doesn''t need anyone to smear her. She does a fine job of acting the hypocrite all by herself. She was pregnant when she got married. She is the one who, with a special needs newborn and a fulltime job, said "You betcha!" when McCain came calling in 2008, instead of putting her family first. Then came the bus rides, rallies, plane trips...all great times for the kids, I''m sure. THEN when they lost, she quit her job, went to LA for months to have her book written for her, went on yet another long bus tour with Trig in hand instead of in therapy, and finally went home for Christmas in 2009. This year, she has raked in millions upon millions for giving her snide speeches at 100 plus events, more buses, more planes, less time mothering. As a Fox commentator, she gives them a certain amount of time each week, and is reportedly doing a TV show. AND she is having her staff research her favorite sermons for her new book. And this is the woman you want as a role model for your kids? As the leader of the free world? Really? She has yet to hold a press conference or meet with any journalist not on the Fox team...leading me to believe that she doesn''t think she can handle it. But hey, meeting with foreign leaders? Piece of cake. I forgot, she is using a Spanish word here and there...so she now speaks pidgeon English, Shakespearean English, and Spanish slang. Wow.

Sarah Palin has been smeared by the media and others (blogggers etc.) who get online, like you, and continue to bash this family with lies like "Trig was on a book tour instead of in therapy". Big deal, so what??? This family can not do one single thing without someone coming online saying how terrible they are. How would you like it if it was your family??? How would you like it if someone was saying terrible things about your family, most of which aren''t true and most of which aren''t anyone''s business. You wouldn''t like it!!! So stop already and act like decent human beings and leave this family alone!!!! How about if I start bashing Obama on here??? Oh I bet that would be a problem, wouldn''t it???? I won''t do it, even though I don''t like the man and his policies, I won''t do it because I am a decent person.

I love how in one comment, Sally both knocks Palin for spending so much time away from her kids and then knocks her again for spending time with her kids by taking them with her when she travels! Sure, it would be nice for everybody to just stay home all day every day so we can all be with our families all the time, but somebodies gotta pay the bills! And people spending all their time with their family don''t become well adjusted individuals, they become serial killers and in-breeders.

What I don''t get is that this music video he is supposed to be doing and she is all upset about was in the news long before they announced getting back together?!?!? Does she too, not read the newspaper? She had to know. These people are ________ too many words to inject. Who needs General Hospital when we have the Palins of Alaska.
