Himes takes pulse of small business community
Posted on 07/09/2010
By MICHAEL BROWN Times Staff Writer STAMFORD -- Congressman Jim Himes visited local small businesses in Stamford on Thursday as part of his three-city, two-day business walk. Himes visited approximately 50 businesses in Stamford, Wilton and Norwalk this week, meeting and speaking with local owners and workers about the condition of their business during the recession. The local business walks come as congressional elections take place this November. On Thursday, Himes visited local businesses in Stamford along East Main Street, including Bev Max, Myrna's Mediterranean Restaurant, Rinaldi's Deli, Manny's Bakery, and Shear Elegance Hair Designs. Himes, accompanied by representatives of his office located at the Stamford Government Center, spoke with owners to see how business was holding up. "We want to get a feel for how businesses are doing," Himes said. According to Himes, the severity of the economic recession's impact depends on the town. "I find that the more affluent neighborhoods are a little better off, and here, things tend to be a little more difficult," the congressman said. Towns such as Wilton remain relatively stagnant, while others like the east side of Stamford may have a bit more trouble. Local businesses, for the most part, were excited Himes took the time to walk through the neighborhood. "I was very happy to meet him, it's good to see he is interested in the economy of Stamford," Helen Sotiropoulos, owner of Shear Elegance, said. "We need someone local, someone strong." Sotiropoulos, who has been a Stamford resident since 1969, said she thinks the local economy was at one of its lowest points she has ever seen. "I think the worst is over -- I see a little change," she said. While the success of local businesses remains somewhat seasonal, Himes is confident he can assist area businesses with credit lines and various means of financial management. The economy is slowly recovering, he said: "It was the worst in 2009, now things are starting to pick up a little bit." Stamford was the last stop on Himes' two-day business walk through lower Fairfield County. Wednesday he visited businesses in Wilton and in the Wall Street area of Norwalk. Following his walking tour, he addressed members of the Business Council of Fairfield County at the organization's Annual Meeting in Stamford.
