Battinelli leads UConn

Staff reports

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The UConn Wrestling Club placed fourth among 21 teams at the Northeast Conference Championships Feb. 27-28 at the University of Vermont, capping a very successful year for the young team and were led by a first-place finish from local standout Mike Battinelli of Stamford at 157 pounds.

Battinelli was the lone gold medal winner with an impressive win in the finals over Walter Pope of U.S. Navy Prep. Pope defeated Battinelli two weeks earlier in the New England Championships at the University New Hampshire.

Taking third-place honors for UConn was Pat Neilon at 184 pounds, Mike Gorton placed fourth at 174, Matt Dombrowski placed fifth at heavyweight, former Masuk standout Micah Flashman placed sixth at 165, Evan Nahins took seventh at 133, and Zacharia Savic took eighth at 125.

UConn, in its second year of existence, had six place winners, including Battinelli, qualify for the NCWA Nationals, which will be held in Hampton Va., from Thursday, March 11, through Saturday, March 13.
