Shippan Racquet Club tops Trumbull

Shippan Racquet Club's 14-and-under Advanced Junior Tennis team rolled past Trumbull, 72-23, and remained in first place in the USTA Winter League.

Shippan jumped out of the gate with doubles victories by Stamford's Prashant Toteja and Darien's Kateri Martin, who posted a 6-2 victory. Stamford's Brian Niguidula and Darien's George Congdon posted a 6-1 victory, and Stamford's Anna Rogers teamed with Julia Akerman for a 6-3 win over a Trumbull boys squad. New Canaan's Digby Philpott and Stamford's Miles Singer closed out a doubles sweep by Shippan with a 6-0 victory.

In singles, winners included Rogers, Niguidula, Akerman, Singer, Toteja, Congdon and Martin. Toteja and Congdon dropped just one game and Martin won 6-0.

Shippan, which has won over 300 games this season, is coached by former Kenyan Davis Cup member Aldrin Dinya. The Stormers have three more matches before competing in the Winter Championships on Saturday, March 20 at Newington.

From there, Shippan has its sites set on the State Championships in July, which feeds to both a regional and national Junior Team Tennis championship.
