AmeriCares aids earthquake-ravaged Chile
Posted on 03/01/2010
STAMFORD - AmeriCares is working to send medical aid and an emergency response team to Chile in the wake of the country's worst earthquake in 50 years. An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday morning, destroying buildings, roads, and bridges and damaging the Santiago International Airport. As of Monday morning, the earthquake has claimed the lives of more than 700 people. "AmeriCares is sending a rapid response team to help provide disaster relief in Chile," said Christoph Gorder, vice president of emergency response for the Stamford-based nonprofit. "Medicines, medical supplies and other humanitarian aid are being readied for immediate shipment." With the main airport in Santiago closed for at least 72 hours, AmeriCares is working with partners in Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Colombia to speed the delivery of relief supplies to survivors, according to agency officials. AmeriCares has delivered more $16 million in aid to Chile since 1989. Since it was established in 1982, AmeriCares has distributed more than $9 billion in humanitarian aid around the world and across the United States, according to agency officials. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
