Mayor names interim health director, medical advisor

STAMFORD -- In response to Dr. Johnnie Lee stepping down as the city's director of health and human services, Mayor Mike Pavia named an interim director on Friday and an interim medical advisor.

Anne Fountain, who, since 2004, has been the city's public health emergency response coordinator, will take over the interim role as director of health and social services, and Henry H. Yoon, M.D., FAAFP, will fill the interim medical advisor position. Lee stepped down from his director post Friday after accepting a position in the private sector.

According to the mayor's office, Pavia chose to split the responsibilities once held by Lee between the two interim directors, with Fountain handling the daily administrative responsibilities and Yoon helping to satisfy the state requirement of having a medical doctor oversee the city's medical clinics.

The cost of the two interim directors will be less than what Lee was making, according to the mayor's office.

"We're fortunate to already have Anne in the Stamford Health Department; her experience with the operation of the health department and health issues, along with her familiarity with the city's current issues, will make this transition seamless," Pavia said in a statement. "She will be a complement to Dr. Yoon's new role. Dr. Yoon is very well established, well qualified and rigorously committed to serving the City of Stamford, and I look forward to his contribution to our community."

Fountain, as the city's public health emergency response coordinator, helped with the city's preparedness planning, and also coordinated local and regional training drills and exercises and mass vaccination planning, according to the statement. She is also the designated responder for the Emergency Operations Center for the City of Stamford. Prior to her service to the city, Fountain was an epidemiologist for the Greenwich Department of Health.

Yoon is an attending physician in private practice at Morgan Street Medicine in Stamford, the medical director at the Stamford-based Optimus Health Care and an emergency department physician at Milford Hospital, according to the mayor's office. He is also an assistant program director at the Stamford Hospital/Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Program in Family Practice.
