Playwrights needed at Darien Library
Posted on 02/09/2010
DARIEN By TAMELA J. RITTER Hour Correspondent Starting Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. the Darien Library, 1441 Post Road, invites any playwright with an unpublished, unproduced play to bring 10 pages to the Catherine Lindsey Memorial Actors and Playwrights Workshop series. The playwrights workshops will continue on March 11 and April 8 and will include short discussions led by Robert and Bridget Cusack, who had collaborated with the Lindseys many times and have taken over the series since Catherine's death in 2005. "We brought it to the library last year thinking in could be another unique production the library could provide and it was a big, big success," said Robert Cusack. At the end of the workshops, six plays will be chosen by a committee to be performed in front of an audience with equity and non-equity actors. The sessions offer actors and playwrights the opportunity to work together to create original theatrical works in a supportive and creative environment. The series culminates in the June 13 program, which will feature staged readings of short scenes from full-length plays, one-act plays, musicals, and monologues. "It's a good time. The playwrights and actors meet with the public, there's wine and cheese, everyone will enjoy it," said Cusack. The workshop welcomes all interested playwrights, with or without experience, to join. Actors are also invited to join the workshop and auditions for the performance will take place in May. Many of last year's participants will be returning, but Cusack's hoping many more will join them as well. "Last year we had six playwrights participate, this year we're hoping for at least ten," said Cusack. The playwrights and most of the actors are local, from Darien, Stamford and Norwalk mainly. Bob Lindsey, who had moved to Essex after the passing of his wife, participated with a play of his own last year and Cusack is hoping he will return this year. The series is celebrating its 18th year. Starting at the Darien Players, it came to the Darien Library last year. The Lindseys had been influential at both venues. "For 25 years, Catherine ran the Darien Library Theater. When we finally put in a space large enough to host this wonderful event, we were honored to pay tribute to her memory by being a part of the event," said Erica Bess, Head of adult programming at the Darien Library. It was the library's first artistic use of their new community room, but Cusack hopes to do many more things with that space. "We're working on putting out three of four plays in the fall," said Cusack. These plays will be by established playwrights but there will be a lot of similarities with the upcoming performance, said Cusack. "The performances are minimalistic with no stage setting and very few props and all productions, all participation are free and open to the public."
