Stamford forms Haitian relief effort

By TOM EVANS
Times Staff Writer

STAMFORD -- Mayor Michael Pavia announced late Wednesday afternoon the formation of a Haitian Relief effort in the wake of the disastrous 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.

According to CNN.com, more than 100,000 are reported dead as of late
Wednesday.

"Special assistant to the mayor, Tim Curtin, is organizing the effort with Yerwood Center's Eugene Campbell and Brenda Culpepper," Pavia said. "We're trying to organize an effort to drop off and ship critical supplies such as medicine, baby essentials, food and clothes."

Pavia said the local population inspired him to do everything he and the city can to help the island nation.

"We have a notable Haitian community in Stamford," Pavia said. "And we need to do what we can for the people affected in the aftermath of this horrible
tragedy."

About 3 million people, roughly one third of Haiti's population, were
affected by the quake, the Red Cross estimated.

In the event people want to contribute food, clothing and essential supplies to this relief effort, people can bring them to the Yerwood Center located at 90 Fairfield Ave. in Stamford, Monday through Friday, between 9:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., and on Saturdays between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Additional details will be provided as they are developed, Pavia said.
