CIAC Class LL Football Championship -- Cheshire defeats Staples, 28-21, in overtime

Cheshire recovered a Staples fumble on the second play of the Wreckers overtime possession to win the Class LL football championship with a 28-21 win. A complete game story will be published later this evening. * * * Cheshire scores on a 2-yard run in the first overtime to take a 28-21 lead. Staples has the ball. * * * Cheshire and Staples heading to overtime tied up at 21-21. * * * Staples first-and-goal from the Cheshire-1 ... Gelman QB-sneak for a TD. Cuertas kick is good. Tied at 21-21 with 1:44 left. * * * Brenden Rankowitz just scored on a touchdown pass from Keith Gelman as Staples cut has cut the lead to 21-14 with 4:44 left in the game. Santiago Cuertas kicked the PAT. * * * Staples just dodged a bullet by intercepting Cheshire in the end zone to avoid another Rams touchdown. It's still 21-7, Cheshire, with 10:50 remaining in the game. * * * Teams have swapped drives twice to open the second half. There is five minutes to play in the third quarter. * * * Following a Staples interception, Cheshire has scored again to make 21-7 at the half. Cheshire QB Greg Palmer has his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time a 6-yard score to go with a 10-yard saunter to the end zone of his team's previous drive. Cheshire also gets to receive the opening kick off to the second half. * * * Cheshire has taken a 14-7 lead with 51 seconds left in the first half after QB Greg Palmer scored on a rushing touchdown. Kyle Pulek kicked the PAT. Cheshire scored after a three-play, 55-yard drive. * * * Cheshire has tied the game 7-7 with 5:06 left in the first half. After the Wreckers fumbled the ball at their own 15 yard line, Cheshire scored when quarterback Greg Palmer hit Brian Havlicek on an 8-yard scoring pass. Kyle Pulek's PAT made it 7-7. * * * Staples holds Cheshire on its first series. Wreckers get the ball back on their own 7-yard line after a punt * * * The first quarter has ended with Staples leading 7-0. * * * Staples has struck first, taking the opening kick-off and scoring on a Matt Kelly 3-yard touchdown run with 3:28 left in the first quarter. Santiago Cuertas kicked the extra point. The Wreckers converted on two fourth down plays to keep the drive alive before scoring. The opening drive was a 15-play, 66-yard scoring drive and ate up the first 8:32 of the game. * * * Staples has won the toss and elected to receive the opening kick-off. * * * WEST HAVEN -- The Hour sports department will be providing regular updates from today's CIAC Class LL football championship game between Staples and Cheshire.
