Tanker fire shuts down I-95 north in Fairfield
Posted on 11/09/2009
(AP) -- Connecticut authorities say Interstate 95 in Fairfield is closed in both directions as crews clean up a tanker truck fire and officials check for roadway damage. No injuries are being reported. The fire occurred in the northbound lanes shortly before 4:30 a.m. Monday and tied up rush-hour traffic throughout southwestern Connecticut. State police Lt. J. Paul Vance says the vehicle’s cab section caught fire after the driver noticed an apparent brake problem. The flammable methanol in the trailer did not ignite. Norwalk, Westport and other local fire department are on scene. Traffic is being diverted to the Merritt Parkway and U.S. 1. Vance says state Department of Transportation crews are joining officers to check whether the fire damaged the pavement. They hope to reopen the road later in the morning.
