Police investigate murder on city's West Side
Posted on 11/05/2009
By CHASE WRIGHT Times Staff Writer STAMFORD -- Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old Stamford resident who was found shot Nov. 4 on the city's West Side. The victim, identified as Stamford resident Denny Alcantara, was shot twice in the torso on Stillwater Avenue near the intersection of West Main Street at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Police labeled the shooting as the city's first homicide of the year. Officers and paramedics responded to Stillwater Avenue, where Alcantara was found bleeding from two bullet wounds to the stomach, said Lt. Sean Cooney, Stamford police spokesman. He was transported to Stamford Hospital and died shortly after arrival, Cooney said. Cooney said investigators are "making progress in the case" but did not go into detail. Stamford patrol officers, investigators and crime scene technicians worked through the night and into Thursday morning processing the crime scene and gathering evidence, Cooney said. They were assisted by canine units from nearby Greenwich and Westport Police Departments, he said. Several people who said they were in the area the night of Nov. 4 when the shooting occurred confirmed the presence of multiple police units, including helicopters flying overhead. Police cordoned off much of the area during the initial investigation, witnesses said. Police had no information to release regarding suspects or a potential motive. The area is well traveled, especially around 6 p.m., and investigators are hoping witnesses who may have information regarding this crime contact the Crimes Against Persons unit at 203-977-4417.
