Police catch fugitive wanted for 11 years
Posted on 10/27/2009
STAMFORD (AP) -- Police say they've caught a former Stamford man who was on the run for 11 years after skipping out on his sentencing for a Norwalk knife slashing. Thirty-six-year-old Osman Gudiel was arraigned Monday in Norwalk Superior Court on a charge of failing to appear in court and ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail. He pleaded not guilty and is set to return to court Nov. 9. Gudiel faces up to 20 years in prison for slashing his cousin with a 10-inch kitchen knife in 1997. A jury convicted him of assault in 1998, but he didn't show up for his sentencing while free on bail. Police say Gudiel was living in Huntington Station, N.Y., and was caught Saturday in Riverhead, N.Y. Gudiel's cousin says he suffered head and hand injuries.
