UPDATE: Stamford hotel expresses sympathy for rape victim suing it
Posted on 08/14/2009
STAMFORD (AP) -- The owners of a Stamford hotel where a woman was raped at gunpoint in front of her children are now expressing "regret" and "sympathy" for the attack after hotel lawyers, in court documents, said she was careless and negligent. Marriott International Inc. issued the statement Friday, a day after news that court papers filed by the Stamford Marriott Hotel & Spa said the woman "failed to exercise due care for her own safety and the safety of her children and proper use of her senses and facilities." Marriott now says it is "profoundly sorry that such a terrible thing happened to the victim of this violent crime." The hotel chain also said the situation has "created a mistaken impression that Marriott lacks respect" for the victim and other victims of violent crimes.
