Kweskin Theatre breaks ground on expansion

STAMFORD -- Theater-goers will soon have another reason to visit Curtain Call's Kweskin Theatre.

Tucked away inside Sterling Farms Golf Course, the Kweskin Theatre broke ground Wednesday on a $1 million renovation of the facility.

The majority of the funds came from City of Stamford, which owns the theatre on Newfield Avenue, said Lou Ursone, executive director of Curtain Call. Additional money was raised through private fundraising initiatives, he said.

"I think back over the years at the number of renovations we've had at Curtain Call and this one is certainly the biggest," Ursone said. "We'll be providing a better environment to both our performers and our patrons."

The last renovation occurred in 2002 when the auditorium was updated. Ursone called this most recent expansion "long-awaited and much needed."

Because the Kweskin Theatre had no dressing room space, performers had to run across the street to the Dressing Room Theatre to get changed between performances.

By adding dressing rooms within the facility, that hassle will soon become a thing of the past, Ursone said. The building will also house larger restroom facilities, an expanded lobby, a rehearsal hall and a basement wardrobe facility, he said.

Patrons can expect the Kweskin Theatre to reopen by December with a local performance of the recent hit Broadway musical comedy, The Full Monty, Ursone said.

The first four shows scheduled for the 2009-10 year will be held in the smaller Dressing Room Theatre, he said.
