Posted on 06/24/2009
DARIEN -- Two of the three city golfers who had qualified for the match play portion of the 107th Connecticut Amateur Golf Championship survived through to Thursday's quarterfinals after winning a pair of match play showdowns on Wednesday. Mike Ballo of Stamford, who golfs out of the host Woodway Country Club, and Nick Cook of Sterling Farms advanced on from the Round of 16 while Alex Murdoch of Sterling Farms was knocked off, 2 and 1, by Brian Murphy of Brooklawn in the Round of 32. In the Round of 32, Ballo coasted to a 5 and 4 victory over TJ Trimboli of Race Brook while Cook got by when Shennecosset's Richard Wilczewski had to forfeit his match. Ballo then cruised by Rudy Hermstadt of East Mountain, by an 8 and 6 tally, while while Cook matched up against Mathew Dziubina and eked out a 1-up win. In Thursday's quarterfinals, Ballo will play Pat Perry of Black Hall while Cook faces Brian Murphy of Wilton, who plays out of Brooklawn. Winners will advance to the semifinals on Thursday afternoon with the championship match slated for Friday morning. In the most surprising Round of 32 match of the day, top-seeded Kevin Josephson of Timberlin, who topped the field after both rounds of stroke play, was beaten Jeff Hatten of Farmington, 1-up, after 19 holes.
