For one day, Stamford's most fascinating private gardens will be open to the public.

On Thursday, June 18, Bartlett Arboretum will host its second Annual Spring Garden Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can explore five private gardens around the arboretum's grounds managed by local homeowners.

"The theme of the tour is inspired gardens," said Bartlett Marketing Director Barbara Rossi. "Each one has its own distinct character and history."

The featured gardens include elements from the southwestern United States, Japan, tropical islands and colonial Williamsburg. Chosen by a selection committee, the gardens are located in the vicinity of Bartlett's grounds.

"It's not just about these pretty properties handled by outside corporations," said Rossi. "The homeowners do their own gardening. They have their own inspiration."

Bartlett Arboretum is a non profit organization on 91 acres in Stamford. Since opening in 1966, the arboretum has housed a variety of regional plants and trees that reflect the character of Southwestern Connecticut.

The event also offers educational opportunities for aspiring gardeners. UConn Master Gardeners will be available throughout the tour to answer questions and identify plants for visitors.

A luncheon for guests will be held at noon on the day of the tour, and a boutique will be selling gifts like tea, skin care products, and pottery. Local musicians and artists will provide additional entertainment.

Proceeds from the event will be used to support environmental programs. By developing eco-friendly gardening techniques, Bartlett hopes to set an example for private gardeners.

"These programs focus on our regional concerns," said Rossi. "We have to maintain our grounds and our property. The design and management of our gardens can show how to live in a more environmentally-responsible manner. People can take our ideas and bring them to their own gardens at home."

An additional fundraiser for Bartlett Arboretum's environmental efforts will be held June 14. Hosted at a private Shippan home, the Spring Garden Tour Patron Party will offer cocktails and refreshment provided by Marcia Selden Catering, as well as Latin dance with Enrique Alarcon.
