Teacher layoff numbers dwindle to 3 in Stamford
Posted on 06/10/2009
By LAUREN MYLO Times Staff Writer STAMFORD -- The number of Stamford teachers who will not have jobs next year has dwindled from possibly more than 50 to an actual three. However, the Board of Education budget, which was finalized on May 28, calls for teachers in more than 40 of those positions to transfer to a different department. According to Stamford Education Association President Lora Rossomando, the teachers' positions are still being cut, which will mean larger class sizes and teachers having to do more with less, but they can put in their request for other district jobs that would normally be filled by new hires. "They (the Board of Education) did make an attempt to find some money to save teacher positions, but that doesn't help the fact that teachers haven't had the training to be as effective as we'd like them to be," she said. "If you're going from third grade to sixth grade that's a big change." The teachers can put in their top three requests and are accepted based on seniority. The Board of Education voted on May 28 to accept an operating budget of $219,408,146 with 1,899.9 positions for 2009-2010.
