Tuition increases possible at state schools
Posted on 12/19/2008
Associated Press HARTFORD -- Students attending the four universities that make up the Connecticut State University system could be facing large tuition increases. The chancellor of the system is proposing that the state Board of Governors for Higher Education waive a state-mandated cap on tuition increases. David Carter suggests the board consider waiving its 15 percent ceiling on increases next year if state budget cuts of 10 percent or more are imposed. Carter says the CSU, made up of Central, Western, Southern and Eastern Connecticut State Universities, would have to raise tuition more than 34 percent next year to make up for such a cut. Carter says although officials would not pass such a large increase they might have to consider raising tuition by more than 15 percent.
