STAMFORD -- The board of representatives welcomed its newest member Monday evening -- Rep. Valerie D. McNeil.

A life-long Stamford resident, McNeil will join Rep. Walter Neary in representing the ninth district, which encompasses a small portion of southwestern Stamford.

McNeil will fill the role vacated by long-time board member Ruby Blackwell, who passed away on Sept. 17.

McNeil, a Democrat, is a relative newcomer to city government, but she's remained active in the West Side community. She currently works as a full-time secretary for Cytec Industries Inc., a global developer and distributor of specialty chemicals and materials, located on West Main Street in Stamford.

She has also served as a volunteer tutor to school-age children at the Yerwood Center and sits on the scholarship and finance committees for the Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist church.

McNeil was sworn in as a city representative Monday night after the board unanimously approved Neary's nomination of her.
