Defense bill promises much for Connecticut
Posted on 10/22/2008
The Connecticut economy will get a boost from a defense bill that Congress has approved that will send $19.2 billion to state defense industries. While we'd love to see other industries not involved in defense receive such a bonanza, it's defense that gets the attention. The Electric Boat Co. in Groton will receive $3.5 billion for another Virginia class submarine. Stratford's Sikorsky will get more than $3 billion for several helicopter projects. Pratt & Whitney, the East Hartford engine maker, will receive $6.8 billion for the Joint Strike Fighter and another $2.9 billion for work on the Raptor military jet. Oh, yes, the $612 billion defense budget includes $95 million in home heating aid for Connecticut's low income families. Chump change when compared with the total defense bill, but we'll take it.
