In a fine display of technique and passing, the Stamford Hurricanes U-13 girls handed Redding United a 5-0 drubbing in the opening round of the 2008 Connecticut Cup competition at Stamford High School on Saturday May 10.
Catherine Cote tallied two goals and an assist, Angela Altamura scored on a splendid give-and-go play with Cote, Ellie Beltran scored an unassisted goal as she came out of goal in the second half and Kaela Schneider took a pass from Nicole Pellicano to score Stamford's last goal.
Francesca Margarone picked up an assist. Beltran and Altamura shared keeper duties and weren't tested much as Stamford dominated play.
Victoria Hannover, Sarah Wyllie and Pellicano had several shots on goal. The Hurricanes will travel to face Wallingford in the quarterfinals on May 17.
Fresh from the Connecitcut Cup win, the Hurricanes travelled to Westport on Mother's Day and shut out the home side, 2-0.
Eleven minutes into the half, Cote capitalized on her speed on a breakaway from midfield, outrunning the Westport defenders to expertly cross the ball past the Westport keeper for the first score.
Beltran logged a dozen saves in net, with Wyllie, Altamura and Hanover keeping up the pressure for the Stamford offense.
Stamford defenders Samantha McNichols, Claire Kaptinski and Katherine Grosso played tough.
Five minutes into the second half Stamford was again able to capitalize on their strong presence in front of the Westport net.
Cote sent a powerful cross toward the goal which Rebeccah Schechter deftly tapped in for the second score.
Stamford continued to have many opportunities. Alex Jordan's powerful throw-ins and strong midfield play by Schneider and Liza Fahey propelled the ball farther into Westport territory and led to shots on goal by Pellicano and Margarone. Altamura took over in nets to complete the shutout.
Defender Kayla Wilson was sidelined due to injury and her teammates wish her a speedy recovery as the team travels to Greenwich on May 18.
Boys U11 White
In a Connecticut Cup game played on Saturday, Stamford had fantastic game with a 4-1 victory over Wilton.
Goals were scored by Denny Lopez, Joey Schinella, Francisco Romero, Tyrell St. John with assists going to St. John, Jake Atkinson, Ian Zacharewicz, Henry Catchpole
Great defensive play by Mike Nuziante and excellent passing in midfield by Mark Soraluz, Andres Vasquez, Jorge Alvarez, Brad Cappello helped Stamford win.
Offensive players Aidan Braken and Ari Berkun kept constant pressure on Wilton. Keeper Greg Robinov made some great saves.
In the team's regular season contest, Stamford defeated Darien, 3-1.
Aidan Bracken, Joey Schinella, and Francisco Romero scored the goals while Mike Nuziante notched an assist.
Boys U-9 Gold
The Stamford Hurricanes U-9 Gold Boys won their first game against Fairfield, 4-1.
Lester Guidel opened the scoring thanks to nifty moves by Tyler Lasicki. The defense was solid and led by Frankie Dente, Michael Medvedev, Adrian Chrzanowski and Jason Alvarez and goalkeeper Justin Wexler.
Guidel scored his second goal after corralling a booming punt from Wexler. Fairfield then scored their only goal on a breakway. Guidel scored again to regain a two-goal lead. Lasicki then scored the team's fourth goal.
Strong play was received from Victor Reis, Joseph Deltorto, Benjamin Joseph, Michael Swingler and Matthew Rutherford.
Boys U9 White
Stamford defeated Wilton, 8-2, last weekend.
Goals were scored by Charlie Teeters and Nadav Zarmi (2 and 1 assist each), Adam Zacharewicz, Nicholas Ulloa (2), Danny Altamura, and Sam Pfrommer. Will Marment with five saves.
Outstanding play by Mikolaj Musial, Christophe Vibien, Mitch Freeland, Michael Newman also aided in the win.
The team also defeated Trumbull, 7-5.
Goals were scored by Adam Zacharewicz, Charlie Teeters, Conor Nicholson (3), Charlie Teeters, and Mikolaj Musial while assists were recorded by Musial, Nadav Zarmi, Michael Newman, and Teeters.
Marment had more great saves while outstanding defense was played by Sam Pfrommer.
U13-Boys
The Stamford Hurricanes U-13 Boys posted their first victory on Sunday, May 11, with a 2-0 win over Westport.
George Ulloa scored with a minute left in a first half that had goalie Matt Hofmann making several impressive saves. In the second half, Evan McCafferty scored off a perfect pass from Patrick Hamon, and goalie Eli Kisselbach blocked a penalty kick to seal the shut-out.
Noah Barr and Michael Lochard contributed strong performances for the defense.
U-10 Girls White
The Stamford Hurricanes defeated Fairfield Chili Peppers, 3-2, on Saturday.
Theresa Angon (2) and Anna Rogers (1) scored goals while the team also got key offensive play from Heidi Druehl, Elizabeth Mastoloni, Amanda Hendry, Alex Lemekha, Elizabeth Grosso, Cassie Herrera, Francesca De Simone, and Katie Sullivan.
Other winning team standouts were Laura Green and Ally Fahey, who combined to play goalie.
Girls U-9 Gold
The Stamford Hurricanes traveled to Burrough's Field in Fairfield on Mother's Day and tied Fairfield Black, 1-1.
Yahaira Novoa was the lone scorer for Stamford, although strong shots were made by teammates Lily Shanahan, Paige Van Cura and Lily Jackson.
Courtney Xu was terrific on defense and had many impressive moves on the field. Newcomer to the Hurricanes, Madeline Zomb, also had a very good game.
The girls next game is scheduled for May 18th at West Beach in Stamford against Fairfield Red at 4:00.
Girls U-15
After a scoreless first half, the Stamford Hurricanes U15 Girls travel team came back strong with a 2-1 win over first place-ranked Weston on May 11 at Westhill High School.
Defenders Claire Hosinski and goalkeeper Megan Flood had strong showings for Stamford while Jenny Raymond scored on a kick just outside the box.
Midfielder Jess Tofano also scored on a Jenny Raymond assist. The U-15 Girls travel team is now 3-1-1 for the season.
U-10 Boys Gold
The Stamford Hurricanes took a very tough 2-1 away loss at the hands of Redding United on Sunday, May 11.
The Hurricanes started out strong with Jackson Day, Bryan Mojica and Matteo Socci giving good cover to keeper Christopher Cote.
Fabio Salvatore, Ariel Sandoval and Jose Vergara played a strong game on offense.
After giving up a penalty kick goal on a questionable call, the Hurricanes soldiered on and were rewarded when Nevan McCann adroitly booted a pass from Jose Ulloa into Redding's net to end the half with a 1-1 tie.
Stamford's Kieran Mulvany and Jack Duffy worked hard on offense and Rafal Bierezowiec made good clearing shots. Cole Berkowitz and Sebastian Matrullo had good runs down the field. Sandoval made a great run into Redding's box and was roughly taken down by two Redding players.
The Hurricanes will host the Fairfield Ricks on May 18.
U-14 Girls
The Stamford Hurricanes defeated Fairfield 2-1 in a thrilling game to remain undefeated.
The Hurricanes came close to scoring early in the game, and were rewarded in the 35th minute when Grace "Wheels" Telesco sent a long arching cross into the penalty area. As the Fairfield goalkeeper came off her line to try to play the ball, Allie "Souzaphone" Souza came darting into the area, and leaped high to redirect the cross and head the ball into the far corner for a spectacular goal.
The crowd was buzzing, and the Hurricanes were energized.
Jessica "Big Foot" Ankle put the Hurricanes up 2-0 with a nice left-footed shot over the outstretched hands of the keeper, but Fairfield battled back with a goal of their own in the 62nd minute.
The last 18 minutes were action packed, but the Hurricanes held on for the victory in a thrilling and well played affair.
Jackie Avellar played well in goal, and other standouts were Sophia "Sofizzle" Verderame, Dana "little Pickles" Johnson, and Jessie "Thing One" Vanderlinden.
