The Stamford FC U-16 girls soccer team wrapped up a successful weekend with three victories, including its first-ever premier win.
The girls kicked off the 2008 spring season on Sunday, April 6, with a dominant 6-0 win over Middletown, thanks to both excellent technique and teamwork.
Penny Cote scored a hat trick, Amanda Vakos added a pair of goals and Christie DelVaglio rounded out the scoring with one goal. Rebecca Hasak tallied three assists.
Cote scored Stamford's first goal of the season on a breakaway in the sixth minute and that set the stage for the impressive victory.
Goalkeeper Alexa Bitetto's excellent work enabled the shutout. She got powerful support from defenders Holly Mantel, Karen Roones and Michelle Rojas.
Midfielders Riley Northrop, Bonnie Wilson and Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick created fine plays that allowed forwards Amy Vicinus and Erin George to threaten Middletown.
Danielle Schinella and Caraline Gargiulo were also strong on defense and both made long throw-ins to move the ball upfield.
Stamford FC also ended its 2008 winter indoor season in Armonk, N.Y., on Sunday night with doubleheader wins over Byram Hills and White Plains.
Stamford prevailed 3-2 over until-then undefeated Byram Hills, thanks to a hat trick from DelVaglio with assists from Hasak and Vakos.
After a seven-minute rest, Stamford rolled over White Plains with a 4-0 victory with goals from Vakos, George, Fitzpatrick and Vicinus. DelVaglio, Fitzpatrick and George picked up assists. Solid midfield work from Sarah Hartford, who had missed the morning game, and excellent defense from Roones, Mantel, Schinella and Gargiulo were factors in the wins, as were offensive efforts by Cote, Northrop and Wilson.
Stamford FC placed second in the Armonk Indoor League.
Stamford Hurricanes
U-13 girls
The Stamford Hurricanes U-13 girls took a 2-0 win over Fairfield in the last match of the indoor season on April 6 in Trumbull.
After a scoreless first half, Nicole Pellicano crossed an excellent pass to Catherine Cote, who finished with finesse. Cote scored again as a shot rebounded off her and caused a misdirection into the net by a Fairfield player.
Keepers Ellie Beltran and Angela Altamura shared the shutout and were strongly supported by defenders Samantha McNichols, Claire Kaptinski and Kayla Wilson. Kaela Schneider, Francesca Margarone and Rebecca Schechter played hard.Victoria Hannover and Alex Jordan had a fine outing and guest player Mallory Hart made a solid contribution to the win.
Stamford fell 2-1 to New Fairfield a week earlier. Beltran was in goal for the whole game. Despite the fact that most of the action was in front of the New Fairfield goal, they scored 13 minutes into the first half on a breakaway run down the field when the ball slipped by a defender at midfield. Four minutes into the second half Cote passed the ball to Alexandra Maciejewski who slammed the ball into the net. Forwards Sarah Wyllie and Julia Vitti created opportunities and although the Hurricanes had many shots on goal in the second half, they were unable to get the equalizer.
U-10 Boys
A very exciting away game saw the Stamford Hurricanes U-10 gold boys tie the Fairfield Heroes, 1-1.
Fairfield was first on the board with a set piece that resulted in a header making it past keeper Christopher Cote.
Rafal Bierezowiec responded in the second half thanks to a perfect cross in front of Fairfield's net from Jose Ulloa.
The defensive line, composed of Jackson Day, Matteo Socci and newcomers Kieran Mulvany and Bryan Mojica, held strong in front of Cote, who made several game saving stops.
Forwards Jack Duffy, Ariel Sandoval, Jose Vergara and Sebastian Matrullo, all new team members, contributed to many threats on offense, but Fairfield's keeper also made impressive saves to retain the tie.
U-9 Boy Gold
The Stamford Hurricanes U-9 Gold team lost 2-1 in a tightly played game against Westport last weekend.
The game was scoreless until midway through the first half when the Hurricanes' Victor Reis scored the first goal off a crossing pass from Frankie Dente.
Westport evened the score at the end of the first half when they converted off a corner kick. Westport continued to apply steady pressure during the second half, but were stymied by the acrobatic saves of the Hurricanes' goalie Justin Wexler.
The Hurricanes also received outstanding defense from Randy Malak and Adrian Chrzanowski during the second half.
Eventually Westport broke through the Hurricanes defense and took a one-goal lead.
The Hurricanes mounted a furious comeback and almost tied the score with minutes left in the game when Victor Reis beat the Westport goalie to a loose ball and chipped it over his head. The ball was bouncing toward the Westport goal and was one bounce from tying the score when a Westport defender kicked the ball away from the goal.
The Hurricanes also received strong two-way play from Matthew Rutherford, Michael Medvedev and Francesco Ninivaggi.
U-14 Girls
The Stamford Hurricanes U-14 girls team came into the Spring season with what one of the players has termed a "cautious optimism". The team has performed very well in previous seasons, and as a result has moved up to the ultra competitive Division I this season.
Perhaps it was the team's rigorous off season training regimen, but the girls looked to have an extra jump in their step as they opened the Spring season with a very impressive and convincing 3-0 victory over Darien.
Allie "Souzaphone" Souza, sent a nice crossing pass which Ali "I Love Barbie" Tarlow blasted the ball into the far corner with her left foot at the 13-minute mark.
The Hurricanes continued to control most of the play, and were rewarded 10 minutes after the first goal when Tarlow, ripped an 18-yard blast for her second goal of the young season, and put the Stamford girls in control of the game.
The Hurricanes were not done with their scoring, and Lexi "Thing Two" Vanderlinden crashed the net to pounce on a loose ball from close range and blasted the ball practically through the back of the net.
Jackie Avellar was solid in goal, and kept barking out signals that kept the Hurricane defense alert and on their toes. Avellar made a nifty save on a close in shot, to keep the game scoreless early, and then depended on her rock solid defense to do the rest.
Mackenzie "Big Mac" Griffin anchors that defense from her sweeper position, with Grace "Wheels" Telesco, Kristina "Roadrunner" Duarte, Sam "Super Sub" Sye, and Julie Cebo filling out the rest of the group.
Sye relieved Avellar in goal for the last 20 minutes of the game to share in the shutout.
