Trinity Catholic Notebook — Crusaders get first-ever boys lacrosse win

Staff Report

BETHEL — The Trinity Catholic boys lacrosse team jumped out to a five-goal lead and won its first-ever varsity game on Thursday, April 2, defeating Bethel, 7-3.

Trinity got two goals each from Brian Hubbert, Max DePhillips and Tomas Botero.

"Actually, they were to pretty evenly matched teams," said Trinity head coach Bob Cavaliero. "I had to apologize to the Bethel coach after because of our exuberance after going 0-16 last season. Our guys were so excited after having last year's down-trodden season. It was a real emotional win for them."

The Crusaders jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first three quarters and even got a goal from freshman Joey DuRubeis, playing his first varsity game.

Goaltender Ryan Boland had 17 saves.

"He played an exceptional game," Cavaliero said. "He kept us ahead by the some of the plays he made."

Before the game even started, Cavaliero addressed his team about how significant the game could become.

"I said to them before the game, 'You have an opportunity to do something pretty historical, to be the first to win in the history of Trinity lacrosse and that's something nobody can take away from you.' They went out and did it."

Trinity got to enjoy the taste of victory for 24 hours, though.

On Friday, Trumbull — still smarting from an overtime loss to archrival St. Joseph — spanked the Crusaders by a 16-2 score.

"We had a taste of reality. It was welcome back to earth," Cavaliero said.

In the loss to Trumbull, Hubbert and DeRubeis had the goals.

The Crusaders also faced mighty Darien on Tuesday and were shut out, 18-0.

For now, though, at least that first win is out of the way.

Boys Tennis

Trinity defeated St. Joseph, 4-3, on Thursday, April 3.

After dropping the first two singles matches, Trinity's 3-through-5 single players Matt Cingari (6-0, 6-2), Mike Callahan (6-4, 6-1) and Scott Einsmann (7-6 [7-4], 6-3) put the Crusaders back in the driver's seat.

The doubles team of Keith Busby and Mark Fonseca clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Girls Tennis

The Crusaders were shut out, 7-0, by Fairfield-Ludlowe in its season opener on Wednesday, April 2.

Softball

Megan Demetros allowed just one hit, pitching Trinity Catholic to a 7-1 victory over Stamford in both team's season-opener on Wednesday, April 3.

Eileen Ornousky's bases-loaded triple for TC led a five-run uprising in the third inning to open some breathing room for Demetros (12 Ks, 3 walks).

Ornousky, Sammi Nemchek and Tina Doehn all had two hits.

On Tuesday, Trumbull shutout the Crusaders, 3-0.

Baseball

Jayme Antonetti's RBI double plated the Crusaders' lone run in their season-opeing 16-1 loss to Stratford on Wednesday, April 2.

John O'Leary had two hits for TC.
