Committee cuts one school nurse

STAMFORD — At an April 28 budget deliberation, the Board of Representatives' fiscal committee recommended the reduction of one of the four proposed parochial school nurses. The recommendation, which cuts $45, 537 from the budget was made by Rep. Scott Mirkin, R-13, and approved 10-1 with Rep. Philip Giordano, D-10, casting the dissenting vote.

The parents of children in the city's 15 private and Catholic schools have been lobbying for increased nursing coverage for nearly a year. Currently the schools share six full-time nurses who also cover the city's 29 preschools and nursery schools.

Earlier this spring Stamford's director of health and human services Dr. Johnnie Lee, requested nine school nurses to cover those school. Mayor Dannel Malloy cut the number to four in his budget request in March. The number is now down to three.

The increase in nursing coverage was prompted by parents of children at Stamford's Catholic schools, who say they need more than a few days of nursing coverage a week, and by the Hartford-based Connecticut Federation of Catholic School Parents, who are fighting the same battle with other districts across the state.

Springtime hours at Recycling Center

STAMFORD — The Scofieldtown Recycling Center will have special Sunday hours, the city announced on Thursday.

Starting May 18 and continuing through June 29, the Rockrimmon Road center will be open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

"This is a heavy period for yard waste, and we want to make sure that residents from all over Stamford have a chance to get to our composting and recycling facility," said Dan Colleluori, solid waste supervisor for the city.

Colleluori said residents can bring grass clippings, brush, logs and any other yards waste in addition to traditional recyclables.

The city will repeat the additional Sunday hours in the fall based on how utilized they are this spring. The city also announced it will be hosting an electronics recycling event on Saturday, May 24, and a household hazardous waste day on Saturday June 14. Both events will take place at Scalzi Park.

Rell asks state leaders to refrain from spending

HARTFORD — Gov. M. Jodi Rell today asked legislative leaders from both parties in the House and Senate to refrain from passing any bills in the remaining 3 days of the legislative session that would either incur additional costs or reduce state revenues in Fiscal 2009.

Rell's letter notes that given the national economic instability, declining tax revenues and the agreement not to make any changes to the FY '09 budget that was adopted in the last legislative session it would be fiscally irresponsible to sign into law any bills that are not already authorized in the budget or risk further cuts in revenue. She warned that any bills that do come to her desk with a fiscal impact will be vetoed.

"Like families across Connecticut, the legislature must make some choices in the days to come," said Rell.
