Stamford FC ousted from State Cup

CHESHIRE — What a difference one minute can make.

Cheshire's Academica FC took advantage of a rare Stamford FC lapse to score back-to-back goals in the second half and end this year's State Cup quest for the Stamford team.

Stamford put up a very good fight in Cheshire on May 11 against very tough opponents. Penny Cote, Amy Vicinus and Amanda Vakos gave a strong performance on offense with midfielders Riley Northrop, Sarah Hartford and Bonnie Wilson providing reliable playmaking.

Danielle Schinella, Karen Roones and Holly Mantel were standouts on defense and keeper Alexa Bitetto made several excellent saves. The first half ended scoreless.

Stamford's best scoring chance came in the opening minutes of the second half as Stamford created chaos in Academia's box, giving Christie DelVaglio a few opportunities at the ball.

After Academica scored in the 56th and 57th minute, Stamford piled on the pressure.

Caraline Gargiulo, Morgan Ilaw and Michelle Rojas cleared the ball out of Stamford's defensive territory. Angela Finn, Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick, Erin George and Rebecca Hasak made excellent runs down into Academica territory but were unable to breach their defenses.
