Stamford Hurricanes Round-up — Girls U-14 wins Connecticut Cup opener



Girls U-14

The Stamford Hurricanes girls U-14 team had a busy weekend of soccer, with the team defeating the Bristol Bobcats in a first round State Cup game by a 3-1 margin.

The Hurricanes controlled the play for most of the game, and Ali "I Love Barbie" Tarlow scored on a breakaway 14 minutes into the game.

Bristol tied the game right before halftime, but the Hurricanes were not to be denied on this chilly Spring afternoon.

Nicole "The Rocket" Pia, lived up to her nickname with a blast from 30 yards out in the 50th minute. Sam "Supersub" Sye followed that goal with the insurance goal eight minutes before the final whistle.




In league play the Hurricanes battled New Canaan to a 0-0 draw. The Hurricanes again carried the play, but just could not finish, and thus had to settle for the tie. Nicole "The Rocket" Pia's shot glanced off the cross bar in the 65th minute, as the Hurricanes remain undefeated in league play.

Girls U-18

The Stamford Hurricanes U-18 girls team beat Norwalk, 3-0, on Sunday, May 4.

After a scoreless first half, the Hurricanes dominated possession and Allie Levene converted from close range in the 57th minute. Levene added another tally 10 minutes later, and Stamford wrapped up the scoring four minutes from the end when Caitlin Stote's low cross was deflected into the net by a Norwalk player.

Julie Osipow and Victoria Gaudioso combined for the shutout. Lindsey Richichi, Lauren Prial, Jamie Manela, and Lauren Beck played strong games in the midfield.

Girls U-10 White

The Stamford Hurricanes U-10 White girls team shut out Darien White, 7-0.

Goal scorers for Stamford were: Katie Sullivan (1), Anna Rogers (2), Francesca DeSimone (2), Laura Green (1), Theresa Angon (1). Assists went to Heidi Druehl, Elizabeth Mastoloni, Amanda Hendry, Alex Lemekha, Cassie Herrera

Elizabeth Grosso and Ally Fahey played in goal and earned the shutout.

Boys U-18

Bernardo Esdras scored off a Mike Correa assist as the Stamford Hurricanes U-18 boys team tied New Canaan, 1-1, last week.

Other team standouts were: Owen Sandoval in goal and Mauricio Llaury, Alan Barajas, Jose Ramirez and Stephen Arenas.

Boys U-10 White

A brilliant game played by Stamford White at home on Friday Evening at Westbeach as the Hurricanes beat Old Greenwich, 2-1.

Stamford controlled the first half and took the lead early with a well placed pass from Max Atkinson to Ben Strait who buried the ball into the back of the net.

The unstoppable defense for the Hurricanes were outstanding with Nick Vanbelle, Nick Lupinacci, Isaac Lowell and exceptional play by Evan Denny with some strong tackles, well-placed passing and determination to get the ball forward not giving Old Greenwich much action on goal.

The second half Old Greenwich came back with an equalizer, but not for long with a great pass from Evan Denny to Carlos Aspiazu and a sneaky kick from the back side of the goal somehow finding its way into the net putting Stamford up, 2-1.

Some great midfield play by Victor Gjuraj, Ralph Daniele, Brad Kaptinski and Fabrizio Obregon helped secure the win for goalkeeper Krystian Lukasiak.

Boys U-11 White

The Stamford Hurricanes U-11 Whites played their season opener to a scoreless tie with New Canaan last week.

Some nice runs and a few shots on goal worked the New Canaan defense.Greg Robinov dove for a great save which ended up being the only real threat to Stamford.

In the second half Francisco Romero had a great shot that hit the post but did not go in. Solid defense, great passing and pressure by the forwards on their defense kept the game scoreless.

In other action, the team beat Monroe Green, 5-3, recently. Goals were scored by Andres Vasquez (3), Aidan Bracken, and Joey Schinella with assists going to Schinella, Ari Berkun, and Denny Lopez.

Great team effort with outstanding play by Tyrell St. John, Ian Zacharewicz, Mike Nuziante, Jake Atkinson, Francisco Romero and Greg Robinov.

Boys U-9 White

It was an agonizing day for Stamford White, which tied Norwalk 1-1. Regardless of the 15 shots on goal, the first half remained scoreless. To start the second half, Norwalk scored first.

In spite of constant pressure, shots by Charlie Teeters, Francesco Ninivaggi, Danny Altamura, Conor Nickolson, Adam Zacharewicz, Nadav Zarmi, Christophe Vibien and Mitch Freeland were unlucky. Finally in the 60th minute Nicholas scored with an assit by Teeters.

Great saves by goalie Will Marment and strong play by Sam Pfrommer, Michael Newman and Mikolaj Musial.

Girls U-10 Gold

The U10 Girl's Hurricane Gold team had another tough outing this past week, losing a heart breaker to Easton, 1-0.

The game was dominated by the Hurricanes for the first half and much of the second, but despite multiple shots on goal by Caroline Ryan, Nicole Labkoff, and Mia Vitti, the Easton goalkeeper kept the Hurricane's shut out.

With about eight minutes left in the game, Easton got a crossing pass and put it past the Hurricane's keeper to go up 1-0 and eventually win the game.

Jenna LeFort had her strongest day yet as keeper. Lena Mersereau, Susie Moore, Natalie Olshan and Margaret Simpson all had excellent contributions. Kayla Gioielli and Cristina Belmonte had their best outing on defense so far this season.

Girls U-9 Gold

Stamford Hurricanes U-9 Girls Gold team lost Sunday, May 4, to Westport Red, 3-0.

Stamford's goalie, Caroline Silk, was fearless in the first half as she deflected three strong shots. The Hurricanes kept Westport at bay with a scoreless first half. Silk had eight more impressive saves in the second half.

Stamford's offense was led by Lily Shanahan, who showed incredible speed and strategy on the field and Paige Van Cura, who exhibited excellent skills. Yahaira Novoa also had a great game with four strong shots on goal.

Stephanie Jordan and Caroline Stanton bolstered the offense with excellent passing and aggressive play. Abigail Yu and Sarah Goldberg played a strong game defensively.

The Hurricane's next game is scheduled for Sunday, May 18 at West Beach against Fairfield Red.

Girls U-15

The Stamford Hurricanes U15 Girls travel team tied Bridgeport AYSO, 1-1, May 4 at Westhill High School.

Stamford defenders Annie Cohen and Alyssa Stern were solid contributors while Kimberly Blasnik got the Hurricanes on the scoreboard with a penalty kick in the second half and helped control the middle of the field throughout the game.

The Stamford U15 Girls travel team is now 2-1-1 for the season.

Girls U-12

The Stamford girls tied Darien, 0-0, during regular season play last weekend.

Team standouts for the Hurricanes inlcuded Tina Beldotti in goal and Madison Vancura on defense.

The girls squad also lost its opening-round Connecticut Cup soccer game, 2-0, to Easton last weekend. No other details were made available.

Boys U-10 Gold

The U-10 Hurricanes Boys Gold team took a tough 2-1 loss to Fairfield United in an away game on Sunday, May 4.

Jose Ulloa got the Hurricanes first on the board in the first half as Stamford showed good ball control. Rafal Bierezowiec, Jackson Day and Bryan Mojica were solid on defense and provided good cover for keeper Christopher Cote.

Midfielders Ariel Sandoval and Nevan McCann sent excellent balls up to Jack Duffy and Jose Vergara as the half ended with Stamford ahead.

Fairfield came out with guns blazing in the second half and bested Cote with a powerful shot. Defender Matteo Socci sent long clearance shots up the pitch for Kieran Mulvany and Cole Berkowitz. Cote made a huge save at point blank range to keep the score low, but Fairfield managed to send a low shot into the nets to take the game.

The Hurricanes travel to Redding to face the Archers on May 11.
