High School Notebook — Trinity Catholic's Demetros helps herself out

WILTON — It's called the classic pitcher's duel.

Trinity Catholic's Megan Demetros and Wilton High School's Kat Poulos — two of the top senior pitchers in the FCIAC — were locked in one of those games that seemed as though it might never end back on Thursday, May 1.

Finally, though, in the top of the 12th inning it was Demetros' bat that helped the end game as she blooped a bases-loaded, two-out single over the head of Wilton's drawn-in shortstop, to help give the Crusaders a hard-earned 2-1 victory.

Demetros and Poulos had put up goose eggs through 11 straight innings before Trinity's two-run 12th gave it a 2-0 lead.

Demetros had to survive one last inning, in which the Warriors scored one run, to pull out the team's state-tournament clinching eighth victory.

Here are the numbers for both pitchers:

For Trinity, Demetros struck out 18 hitters while giving up just six hits.

For Wilton, Poulos fanned 19, walked one and gave up four hits.

Boehn's bid for third no-hitter falls short

Sophomore Tina Boehn, who made headlines last month by throwing back-to-back no-hitters for Trinity Catholic, took to the circle again last week against Greenwich.

No third straight no-no would be had, however, as the Cardinals got to Boehn for eight hits in a 4-1 victory over the Crusaders.

KLHT softball team remains unbeaten

With the Fairchester Athletic Association playoffs just around the corner, the King & Low-Heywood Thomas softball team rolls along, still undefeated after Tuesday's 21-0 win over Wooster.

Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Della Jacono fired a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts to highlight the Vikings latest victory. She also paced the offense with three hits and two RBIs.

Jamie Smith drove in two runs with four hits while Ali Greco plated a trio of runs on three hits. Maggie Nolan also had two singles and a double while Hayley Smith tripled.

KLHT, which is now 11-0 on the season, had four regular season games remaining as of Wednesday's deadline before the WNEPSA tournament starts on May 17 and the FAA tournament on May 19.

Also, for the record, KLHT has out-scored opponents by a 184-12 mark and has given up just one run in its last five games.

Kylee Ruther returns to Westhill line-up

After missing a handful of games due to an injury, Westhill third baseman Kylee Ruther— one of the team's top hitters — returned to the Vikings line-up last week, according to head coach Tom Pia.

She also didn't take long to make her presence felt.

In an 11-2 win over Darien last Friday, Ruther tripled and singled and drove in a run and she also had the game-winning RBI in Westhill's 6-4 come-from-behind victory over Norwalk on Monday.

Westhill's Herritt gets school triple jump mark

While second-year pole vaulter Meg Van Name broke her school record twice in Monday's home meet (See Page C1), it wasn't the only school record to fall that day.

Triple jumper Chelsea Herritt's hopped, stepped, and jumped her way into the record books with a new school-record leap of 34 feet, 5 inches.

She also won the long jump with a leap of 16-7 3/4.

Other double winners for Westhill in the meet, which the Vikings split with McMahon (99-46 win) and Fairfield Warde (82-63 loss) were hurdler Rebecca Lesperance and distance specialist Maddie Elkins.

Trinity Catholic's Ballo shoots par 36 in loss

Trinity Catholic golfer Peter Ballo shot an even-par 36 during Tuesday's match againt Ridgefield, but the Crusaders lost by a mere stroke, 165-166.

Black Knights boys tennis tops Trinity

The Stamford Black Knights improved their boys tennis record to 3-8 last week with a 6-1 win over cross-city rival Trinity Catholic on Friday, May 2.

Trinity's Steve Szemenyel pulled out the win at No.1 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory, but the Knights took the remainder of the matches to pull out the team match.

Stamford singles players Frederico Lascano (6-1, 7-5), Brad Smyth (6-4, 6-1), Alex Marenco (6-4, 6-1) and Ryan Knight (by forfiet) got wins as did the doubles teams of Paul Springer-Sean Morris (6-2, 6-0) and Rob Michaelson-John Fu (6-1, 6-0).

KLHT boys lax knocks off Trinity

It's not too often that King & Low-Heywood Thomas and Newfield Ave. neigbor Trinity Catholic hook up in the sports world, but that's what happened on Thursday, May 1, when the two schools lacrosse teams went head-to-head.

The final score was a 10-2 win for KLHT.

Thomas Hobbs scored five goals to lead the Vikings charge. Single goals came from Alex Doering, Vincent Love, Will Orenstein, Kevin Pierre-Lewis and Connor Sullivan.

For Trinity, Brian Hubbart and Tomas Botero notched goals.
