Stamford Notebook — Baseball off to 4-0 start



Staff Report

STAMFORD — The Stamford Black Knights baseball team ran its record to 4-0 to open the season, capping the week off with a 19-1 drubbing of Warren Harding on Tuesday.

Anthony Pandone's five-hit day capped the Stamford victory while Gavin McCullough had two doubles and a single. Greg Palumbo has returned from his injury and heated up, posting three hits and three RBIs. Tim Guilano took the win.

The Knights opened their 2008 season with a 16-0 drubbing over inner-city rival, Wright Tech.

Sean Cribbins (3 RBIs) Anthony Pandone (2 RBIs) and Gavin McCullough each had two hits while Carl Battinelli had a home run. Starting pitcher Mitch O'Meara went three innings, striking out seven of the 10 batters he faced. Scott Caporizzo followed suit, also fanning seven of the 10 hitters he went up against.




Stamford then went 2-0 on Saturday when Luke Anderson slammed two home runs, one a solo shot, one a three-run blast to lead the Knights to a 6-5 win over Woodstock Academy.

On Monday, Stamford made it three straight with a 7-0 win over Darien. O'Meara hurled a two-hitter while McCullough had two hits and an RBI and Matt Gencarelli had a two-run home run and another RBI hit.

Softball

After an 0-2 start to the season, in which they scored only one run, the Knights earned back-to-back wins in totally different fashion.

On Tuesday, Shirley Zayas had a four-hit day with two RBIs to lead Stamford to a 20-3 win over Harding.

That win came a day after Brittany Moavero had a two-run single with two outs in the top of the seventh, giving the Knights a 7-6 win over Darien. Lauren Butler had three hits to that winning effort.

One bad inning cost Stamford in a 7-1 season-opening loss to Trinity as the Knights gave up five runs in the third to lose the game. Katie Pape's infield single was the lone hit for Stamford.

Megan Robustelli's single in the fourth inning was Stamford's lone hit against Masuk pitching star Rachel Fico, who struck out 15 in the five-inning game; a 17-0 win for Masuk, in the second game of the season.

Boys Lacrosse

Nick Sotire's three goals led the Black Knights to a season-opening 9-5 win over Danbury on Wednesday, April 2. Sean Walsh chipped in with two goals and an assist.

The Black Knights fell to 1-1 on Saturday when they lost an 11-8 decision to Shelton. Sotire had four goals in that game.

Girls Lacrosse

The first-ever official high school programs from both Stamford and Westhill will meet on Saturday at 11 a.m., at Westhill's Kennedy Sports Complex.

Girls Tennis

Stamford evened its record at 2-2 with a 7-0 whitewashing over Norwalk on Tuesday. Winners for the Black Knights were Anna Papush, Ragini Phansalkar, Melanie Lopez and Jessica Strahmel in singles and the doubles teams of Heather Wilson-Stephanie Horn; Samantha Brian-Alyssa Mark; and Jenelle Taylor-Annie Drowne.
