High School Baseball — Stamford wins City Championship

STAMFORD — Although a city championship was a goal for his team coming into this year, Westhill coach D.J. Mulvaney knows there is plenty of games left in this season and the key is for the Vikings to be playing at their best when post -season starts.

Stamford(13-1 in FCIAC and 15-1 overall) is No. 1 in the city after out-slugging Westhill (10-4 in conference and 12-4 overall) by the score of 12-7 on Wednesday, May 7.

The Black Knights Gavin McCullough started and raised his record to 4-0. McCullough pitched well, according to Westhill's Mulvaney. Mulvaney said his starter, T.J.Hickey, had an off day but gave credit to the Stamford offense.

Mulvaney said it is tough to lose two in a row especially with Faifield Ludlowe ( 14-1 overall and 13-0 in conference) up next but he pointed to last year when his team had a 10-game win streak in the middle of the year then according to Mulvaney went flat at play off time.

"As long as we keep fighting that all we can ask," said Mulvaney. "I think we haven't hit our stride yet and hopefully as long as the kids keep working, we will going into post-season."

Westhill jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second but that lead had a short life as the Black Knights took the lead for good in the top of the third with four runs for a 4-1 lead.

The Vikings pushed two across in the bottom of the frame but Stamford stretched their lead to 9-3 in the top of the fourth stanza.

The Black Knights added a run in the top of the fifth then the Vikings gave their fans one more glimmer of hope plating four runs in their next at bats but that was as close as they could come as Stamford scored twice more in the top of the seventh to make the final score 12-7.

Stamford's offense was led by McCullough, Anthony Pandone and Carl Battinelli, each of whom had three hits. Luke Anderson added two hits and four RBIs.

The Viking offense was led by Sean Mullins, David Fogel and Bobby Miggliazza who each had two hits.
