Conn. governor, congressional delegation at odds on highway funds

WASHINGTON (AP) — Gov. M. Jodi Rell and Connecticut's congressional delegation are sparring over Rell's charge that the state's share of Federal Highway Administration funds for fiscal year 2008 was reduced by $45.5 million, including $21.9 million in bridge money.

Rell wrote to the delegation this week to voice her disappointment. The delegation responded with a letter denying the charge, saying Connecticut actually saw a $42 million increase in funds for the current fiscal year. The lawmakers said the funding included $33.5 million the state can use to fix any of its 66 structurally deficient bridges.

A spokesman for Rell says her letter was meant to encourage the delegation to work with the state to keep future reductions to a minimum, and although the authorization may have increased, the actual dollars to Connecticut did not.
